Heirloom Tomatoes

Lumpy, striped, and sometimes downright strange looking — and often the best-tasting tomato on the table.

Seasonal

Heirloom tomatoes are old varieties grown for flavor rather than for shipping well or looking uniform. They come in reds, pinks, yellows, greens, and stripes, and no two look quite alike.

If you have only ever had the round, even-red kind from a shelf, a good heirloom in season is worth trying at least once.

TODO_CONTENT: Confirm whether Griffin's currently has heirloom tomatoes before presenting availability as current.

Also called
Old-variety tomatoes
Tastes like
Rich, sometimes sweet, sometimes tangy — more tomato flavor than the perfectly round grocery kind.
Texture
Tender, often juicy, with soft flesh.
How to choose
Pick them heavy for their size with a little give. Cracks and odd shapes are normal and fine.
How to store
Keep them on the counter, not in the fridge. Cold flattens the flavor.
How to use
Best raw and barely dressed — sliced with salt, or on a sandwich.

Fun fact: The ugliest heirloom on the table is often the one everybody fights over.
